Making room for the river in your wedding photos

A waterfront portrait needs a little space around the two of you. I'd plan a few wider photographs that show the river, then move in closer for expressions and the small moments between poses. That gives you a sense of the place without making every photograph look the same.

The view and the light are separate things to plan for. A spot with a clear river backdrop can be bright at one hour and much easier to photograph later. Before settling on the ceremony time, we'll look at the season, where you'll be standing, and how much daylight remains afterward.

A photo timeline that leaves you time at the reception

If you want to see each other for the first time at the ceremony, keep the family group list manageable and allow time afterward for just the two of you. If spending more of cocktail hour with guests matters more, a first look may give us room to take some portraits earlier. Either choice can work; it changes where we put the time.

For riverfront photos later in the day, I'd leave a short opening in the reception schedule rather than promise a particular sunset. Cloud cover and the direction of the light affect the result. We can make that call together as the day unfolds.

Talk through the indoor plan, too

Riverside Pavilion has indoor and outdoor space. On your tour, ask to see the ceremony and reception arrangements for both. Find out where family portraits would happen if rain moves everyone inside, and whether that area will already be set for dinner.

Wind is also worth thinking about for photos by the water. A veil with movement can make a lovely photograph, but we should have another option for group pictures when hair and clothing need a moment to settle. Bring any concerns about outdoor portraits into our planning conversation.

• Which waterfront areas are included in our rental and available for portraits?
• Where would the ceremony and family photos move if it rains?
• When can the photographer enter to photograph the room before guests arrive?
• Will any setup changes affect the time between the ceremony and reception?
